Lilyhammer, acrylic on canvas, 8 x 10 inches.  We’ve been watch the TV series Lilyhammer starring Steven Van Zandt, and this scene was perfect as some inspiration to relate to the series.  This painting was inspired by a photograph I found on pixabay.com.

The after a wash of burnt sienna (see below), I did an underpainting to identify the lights and darks of the scene.  I then started at the top with the sky, and painted in the masses of the mountains to the right, and the snow covered hills to the left and on down to the foreground.  The three snow boarders were initially sketched on to the underpainting, put I decided to use a matte medium to attach a cut out of the three people.  I gently cover the underside with the medium, and put in on the painting, and was careful to run air holes out.

To give the painting more texture, I used a heavy gel to create thick impasto surfaces.  You can see the impasto in the snow in the foreground, and for some of the rocks and outcrops on the hills.
