Acrylic on canvas, 16″ x 20.”

One of our favorite coffee shops is Theo’s located at the Avenues in West Cobb.  On the wall as you enter the cafe is a portrait to Theo van Gogh, Vincent van Gogh’s brother.  Theo was Vincent’s younger brother, and because of work as an art dealer, he sent money to his brother which enabled Vincent van Gogh to work full time as an artist.  The brothers died very early, Vincent at age 37 in 1889, and Theo at age 33 in 1890.

I photographed the picture in Theo’s cafe, and used it as my reference photo for the painting.  I made a drawing using charcoal on the canvas, and then used a wash to block in the light and dark areas of the image.  There are multiple layers of paint on the final painting.  This is a very short slide show that includes images taken in Theo’s Cafe, and my underpainting and final version.
