Lincoln is a city in England that we have visited for the past 20 years. It’s located in the English East Midlands, about 3 hours north of London. We traveled to Lincoln to purchase antiques from shops and dealers at shows in the area, including Newark and Lincoln.

I’ve used one of many photos taken at the “top” of Lincoln City. Lincoln is famous for its medieval Lincoln Cathedral and Lincoln Castle. The Castle houses a Victorian prison (which we’ve been in) and a copy of the Magna Carta (which we’ve seen).

I chose this photo to paint three versions of the scene.

The first painting was based on a rendered image of the Lincoln Castle scene that I modified using Waterlogue, a nifty app that allows to turn any photo into a watercolor print.

The second painting was based on the photo of the Lincoln scene. In this painting, I used only black and white and a bit of red for the door of the Club.

The third painting uses a variety of acrylic colors to create a scene based on the photo.

I’ve presented the results of the project into three sections as follows:

The “Waterlogue Painting

I used Waterlogue to make a “painting” from the photo of Lincoln.

I used the Waterlogue image as my reference photo to paint a version of the Lincoln scene. Here are the results.

Black and White Version

To study the values in the reference photo, I decided to paint a black and white painting of Lincoln Castle, as shown here. I’ve also included a comparison of the black and white to the Waterlogue painting.

To finish the project, I painted a third version of the Lincoln scene.
