Boating (based on a Manet)

Acrylic on Canvas, 8 x 10 inches.  This is a painting based on Edouard Manet’s  (1832 – 1883) Boating which was painted as an oil on canvas in 1874. I prepared the canvas with a layer of pale umber out of the tube.  I was able to trace Manet’s painting onto the canvas.  I then blocked in the darks and lights using burnt sienna. And the blocking in, I started with the water and used a course brush to paint on blue and white using cerulean blue and titanium white.  I then worked on the boat using a variety of browns which I...

Hurricane Irma and Jose

Acrylic on Canvas board, 14 x 28 inches. I had just finished an art project painting Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh in an online course with Ginger Cook, and had also painted four acrylics showing what happened to people in Houston in aftermath of Harvey. In doing some research on the internet about the winds associated with hurricanes, I came across some work that used photos from NASA to show just how far reaching and powerful the winds of hurricanes are.  The patterns I found on the Internet were striking in that I had just completed the...

Grey Mountain

Acrylic on Board, 11 x 14 inches.  I covered the board surface with two layers of Master’s Touch acrylic gesso.  Using a reference photo of volcanoes that I downloaded from pixabay.com, I made a drawing on the gessoed board.  I then blocked in the sky, mountains, and foreground using the complementary of the colors seen in the image from Pixabay.  The final blue sky was first blocked in using orange; the dark blue of the volcanoes was painted yellow-orange, and so forth into the foreground.

Mountain Cabin

Acrylic on Canvas panel, 8 by 10 inches. This painting is based on photo I found on pixabay.com.  I used pale umber for a base coat on the canvas panel, and then made a drawing of the mountain scene using the original Pixabay photo.  The original drawing was too specific and complicated, especially trying to show the various formations and foliage in the mountains.  After watch a couple of different videos on the web, I decided to simplify the painting by unifying the mountains, and added a coil of foliage on the left side of the painting....
